Introduction

In recent years, the world has faced numerous challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic, wars, and shifts in social and economic structures—all of it continue to shape the cultural, social, and economic landscape globally. At Rentola, we strive to understand and examine these changes, presenting them in a user-friendly way, often through rankings.

This time, we have created a scenario: what if a new epidemic turned people into zombies and a war between the living and the dead broke out? Where in Poland would be the best place to survive? We analyzed five categories of data (Vulnerability, Hideouts, Supplies, Safety, and Mobility) and identified the top Polish voivodeships and cities based on their average scores.

So if you're not fortunate enough to live in the safest voivodeship during a global zombie apocalypse, we recommend using our website to find accommodation in the right place!

introduction

5 groups of data

Each of the five categories includes a set of data points that have been carefully selected to reflect the characteristics of that specific category. Each of these specific data points was examined and assigned a value for every voivodeship and city, after which an average value was calculated. Presented below is an overview of the underlying data utilized for each category:

  • vulnerability icon

    Vulnerability

Indicators: POPULATION DENSITY INDEX, DEATH RATE INDEX, DISABILITY INDEX, LONG-TERM HEALTH CONDITIONS, ETC.

Some places are just perfect breeding grounds for big disease outbreaks that spread quickly. Think about recent years when we saw a combination of factors: lots of people packed together, tons of tourists coming and going, a high number of chronic diseases in the population, and even the risk of disasters. We looked at all of this to figure out which voivodeships and cities are most at risk of being overwhelmed by a wave of zombies.

  • hideouts icon

    Hideouts

Indicators: APPROPRIATELY SIZED HOUSING INDEX, TOTAL DWELLING UNITS, SEPARATE HOUSES, ETC.

Forget what you've seen in movies about astronauts saving the day from asteroids; the apocalypse is more like a thrilling game of hide and seek. That's why it's important to find the very best hiding spots—those secret places that are extra safe and tucked far away. This index shows you how many hiding places each voivodeship or city has, so you can find the perfect spot to stay hidden.

  • supplies icon

    Supplies

Indicators: AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES, NUMBER OF FOOD STORES, NUMBER OF PHARMACIES, ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD SERVICE ACTIVITIES, ETC.

You'll need a lot of things: food, fuel, tools, weapons, clothing, medicine, etc. When it comes to survival, efficiency and convenience are the name of the game, so it is better to have all these shops nearby so that you can borrow goods from them as soon as possible.

  • mobility icon

    Mobility

Indicators: NUMBER OF PASSENGER CARS AND MOTORCYCLES PER HOUSEHOLD, NUMBER OF GAS STATIONS, ETC.

In a world overrun by zombies, you might need to go on big adventures to find other survivors, important stuff you need, or just some good fortune. That's when having a reliable way to get around becomes your best friend, and being able to move quickly and easily becomes your most important asset. Remember, when things get difficult, being able to move fast and freely is like having a superpower.

  • safety icon

    Safety

Indicators: CRIME INDEX, GUN STORES, NUMBER OF POLICE STATIONS ETC.

Speaking of self-defense… We looked at who has the most weapons, specialized stores, and police stations, so get ready to unveil the champions who are armed to the teeth and primed to turn those undead foes into sizzling hot barbecue.

LUBLIN(Lubelskie) VOIVODESHIP IS THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE

According to our findings, Lublin comes up on top in terms of being the voivodeship with the highest zombie resistance. But what makes this quiet province near Warsaw, Białystok, and Kraków well poised to fight off a wave of zombies or avoid them appearing altogether? Lublin achieved relatively high scores in all categories. Despite not ranking within the top five in the HIDEOUTS and MOBILITY categories due to its comparatively limited number of residences and vehicles, it boasts the highest average score among all contenders. The province is quite highly rated in SAFETY (2nd), VULNERABILITY (3rd), and SUPPLIES (3rd), so in case of a zombie threat, you will be well-protected and equipped with everything you need.

STAY AWAY FROM LESSER POLAND(Małopolskie), POMERANIAN(Pomorskie), AND SUBCARPATHIAN(Podkarpackie) VOIVODESHIPS

According to our research, the Lesser Poland voivodeship has been identified as the most unsafe place to survive a zombie apocalypse. It ranked last in the MOBILITY category and 15th in the SUPPLIES category. Ensuring you have enough provisions is absolutely crucial, and having sufficient vehicles is equally essential. Without an adequate supply of both, you could end up in a dire situation, stuck between hordes of zombies on one side and facing the grim reality of starvation and disease on the other. So even if Lesser Poland is often recognized as a pleasant place to live in times of peace, it would be far from ideal to stay in the province during a zombie outbreak!

Moving on to the Pomeranian voivodeship, it secured the 15th position in both the VULNERABILITY and MOBILITY categories and the 14th position in the SAFETY category. Despite achieving impressive results in the HIDEOUTS category (ranking 3rd), when we take into consideration the limited availability of transportation and self-defense weapons, along with the high population density and susceptibility to various viral diseases, it becomes evident that this province is not the optimal choice for surviving a zombie infestation.

As for the Subcarpathian voivodeship, it ranked 15th in the HIDEOUTS category, followed by the 14th position in the SUPPLIES category, and the 12th position in the MOBILITY category. These rankings indicate a recurring issue seen in the previous provinces. With such low scores in these critical categories, it's evident that survival in this area will pose significant challenges.

MORE TO COME! THE SIX LARGEST CITIES IN POLAND THAT ARE BEST FOR SURVIVAL

To ensure the accuracy of our research, we decided to take an additional look at the six largest cities in Poland and identify which of them provides the most favorable conditions for surviving a zombie apocalypse.

And in this study, we made an interesting discovery! While initially identifying Lublin voivodeship as the safest one, a city on the opposite side of the country unexpectedly took the lead. According to our research, Poznan is the safest and most comfortable city to withstand the undead invasion.

Poznan secured the top position in both the SUPPLIES and VULNERABILITY categories. This means you can expect an abundant supply of food, water, and medicine, with a slower spread of disease, increasing your chances of survival. While the city's options for safe hiding places and self-defense tools may need improvement, a little creativity can transform it into a formidable survival fortress!

Although it's commonly believed that the capital of any country is usually the worst place to face a zombie invasion due to its large population, the quick spread of diseases, and high demand for essential resources, Warsaw surprisingly made it to our top three. With its excellent living standards, extensive transportation system, and housing options, Warsaw had the potential to be the frontrunner in our research. However, as expected, it ranked last in both the VULNERABILITY and SUPPLIES categories, greatly reducing its overall score.

And lastly, it turns out that Łódź is a city to avoid during a zombie apocalypse, and there are several reasons for that. According to the information we obtained, it ranked last in the MOBILITY category, which means that securing a vehicle here would be extremely difficult. Łódź also finished last in the HIDEOUTS category, presenting significant challenges in finding safe places to rest and recover. The city has a relatively high mortality rate and a notable incidence of viral diseases, indicating a rapid spread of the zombie virus. Although Łódź performed well in the SUPPLIES category, securing second place, it could not salvage its overall ranking. Ultimately, it placed last among the largest cities in Poland suitable for survival during a zombie outbreak.

All data has been collected and processed from Główny Urząd Statystyczny. The latest data available has been used for each data source. Min-max normalization has been used to index the data sources in question. This method of indexing allows us to convert any kind of data to a value between 1-10, where 1 represents the lowest / worst value and 10 the highest / best value within the categories in question. This means that the higher a score an area achieves, the better it is relative to the others.
